Bridges and Viaducts: monitoring guidelines

Recent collapses of bridges and viaducts have turned the spotlight on the safety of
our road infrastructures. Examples are the collapse of the Polcevera viaduct in Genoa, the bridge between Annone and Cesana Brianza or the viaduct on the Fossano ring road.

Regardless of location, the problem is clear: lack of appropriate maintenance.

This could be solved with careful monitoring of the infrastructure. New technologies would allow a large number of facilities to be monitored with a minimal deployment of resources, significantly reducing inspection costs and raising the overall level of reliability.
